THE CABLES

ACTION BY THE PREMIER

SYDNEY, April 20,

Mr. Seddon conferred with Mr. Barton in reference to cable matters. The Eastern Extension Compan}* ask for a twenty years' agreement. Mr. Seddon urged that the matter should remain in statu quo pending discussion on the cable and cognate subjects by the Imperial Conference. Mr. Seddon feels certain that they had the Eastern Extension Company well in hand if the Federal Government realised its position in the matter. The New Zealand Premier is also satisfied that cables could be sent between Sydney and Wellington at no greater charge than a telegram now costs between Sydney and Melbourne.

LONDON, April 19

The Inter-departmental Committee reports that a cable touching only on British or friendly neutral territory ought to connect every important colony or naval base in the British Empire, and thereafter many alternative cables are possible, and may be established along commercial routes. The committee recommends free trade in cables, exceptions being admissible only on national grounds.
