THE NINTH CONTINGENT.
'In recording the arrival of the troopship Devon at Sydney from 'Auckland with the North Island Battalion of the Ninth Contingent the Sydney "Daily Telegraph" says:— "The catering on board for the officers and men is a revelation of the changes that have recently been effected by up-to-date agents in the matter of transport accommodation for South African soldiers. Practically speaking, there is neally no difference in the fare supplied to the officers and men, and, in addition to [this, Messrs Birt and Co. have provided an excellent chief steward* whose instructions-are to see that nothing but the best of everything is supplied in whatever quantities required. The:eating and sleeping accommodation on the transport is all that could be desired. The ventila> tion is good, and as there is an excellent system of 'cleaninig up' after each meal the ship is always tidy. Notwithstanding their rough experience at sea, the troops look in splendid health, and the hearty greetings of 'Tenakoe' and . 'Kapai te Moana Port Jackson,' heard as visitors stepped on board yesterday morning, showed that they'were in the best of spirits."
