MINISTER FOR EDUCATION. The Hon. W. C. Walker returned to Wellington last night.

Mr T. E. Donne, of the Tourist Department, is seriously ill.

FIRE ALARM.

It is intended to fit the Auckland Lunatic Asylum with electric fire alarms invented by Mr May, formerly a Government electrician at Dunedin. The apparatus is very sensitive, the effect ol striking a match being sufficient to raise an alarm of fire in the asylum and simultaneously at the lire station. THE GOVERNMENT STEAMERS. The Government s.s. Tutanekai goes on the slip for repairs and additions. The work is expected to last a week, bhe ■will afterwards go on lighthouse work.
