AGENT-GENERAL'S CABLE.

Following is the Agent-General's cablegram, dated London, February 22nd:— The mutton market is very dull, trade for all classes being slow, and prices barely maintained. There is a scarcity of prime quality. The average prices today are: Canterbury, 3£d; Dunedin, Southland and Wellington meat export, 3id; other North Island, 3Jd; River Plate, 3 1-6(1. The lamb market is weak. The weather lately has been very unfavourable to the sale of lamb. Competition amongst holders of Australian to clear stocks has lowered values. Canterbury lamb, Sid; other brands, i»*d; Australian, 4d. Beef is firm, the high prices restricting business in New Zealand beef, of which there is some really prime quality now on the market. Hind quarters are quoted at 4gd; fores, 3Jd. The butter market is firm, and a good demand exists for New Zealand butter, which is giving satisfaction to buyers. The price today is 113/. There is a better demand for cheese, small supplies being on hand, price 50/. Hemp is firm. Good fai- Wellington, £39; March-May shipments. £37. Cocksfoot is quiet. It is reported that the quantity of cocksfoot shipped from New Zealand to London this season will be small. Holders are firm at New Zealand 171b standard. 43/.
