GREY LYNN COUNCIL.
Before the ordinary business commenced at the meeting of the Gre)y Lynn Borough Council, the Mayor, Mr K. T. Warnock, said: "I think, gentlemen, you will agree with me that it is time that it is the duty of this Council to say something about the slanders on our army. It is with pain and indignation I have to refer to the gross slanders published in the German press on the British and Colonial troops now serving in South Africa, our noble Queen Alexandra, the Bight Hon. J. Chamberlain, and the honour of the British nation. These scurrilous lies, and shameful caricatures are not confined to the paid g-utter press of Germany, as even their legislators are repeating their vile slanders and lies against the British Fmpire, and those who have done their uttermost to promote friendly relations between .the two countries. I fully endorse the statement made by the Bight Hon. Mr Seddon when he said that these German slanders would turn out to be a blessing in disgnise, and T believe that the invasion cf a British colony by the Boers has done more to build up and cement together the British Empire than any other act or circumstance during the past century." His Worship then moved : "This Council on behalf of the Borough of Grey Lynn, desires to place on record its repudiation of German slanders regarding the conduct of the war in South Africa. The Council is convinced that there is ample evidence that the behaviour of our troops has been exemplary, and that the authorities had made every effort which the conditions of a state of warfare admit of to care for the enemies' sick and wounded, and for the prisoners of war." Cr. B. C.,. Foster seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. The Mayor' next moved: "That this •Council desires to place on record and convey to the Bight Hon. ,1. Chamberlain its highest admiration of the noble and spirited manner in which he has upheld the honour of the British Empire, and also desires to express entire confidence in the conduct of the war by the British Government." Cr. Brinsden seconded this motion, which was agreed to. On the motion of Cr. A. Donald, it was decided to forward copies of the resolutions to His Excellency the Governor with a respectful request that they be sent on. to the British Government.
