The New Zealand Chess Championship Tournament was commenced on December 26 in the Harbour Board Buildings. In the first round of the Auckland competitors Miles beat Jaquet after a long game of 54 moves, and Grierson defeated Jowitt. The second round was played off the following day. Miles beat Grierson, and Forsyth won his game with Edwards. The third round was played on December 28, when Jaquet defeated Grierson, Miles beat Jowitt, and Barnes defeated both Forsyth and Edwards. Barnes thus secured the championship and" the first prize of £20. Miles and Forsyth, who tied for second place, divided the second and third prizes, each receiving £7 10/. At the conclusion of the tournament a dinner was given in honour of the visiting chess-players.when the usual toasts were duly honoured.
