CHESS.
The New Zealand Chess Championship Tournament was commenced on December 26 in the Harbour Board Buildings. In the first round of the Auckland competitors Miles beat Jaquet after a long game of 54 moves, and Grierson defeated Jowitt. The second round was played off the following day. Miles beat Grierson, and Forsyth won his game with Edwards. The third round was played on December 28, when Jaquet defeated Grierson, Miles beat Jowitt, and Barnes defeated both Forsyth and Edwards. This completed the first half of the tournament, the scores being: Barnes, 2 wins; Edwards, 2 losses; Forsyth, 1 win, 1 loss; Grierson, 1 win, 1 loss; Jaquet, 2 wins, 1 loss; Jowitt, 3 losses; Miles, 3 wins. The fourth round •was commenced on December 30, when Barnes beat Jowitt, Jaquet succeeded in defeating Edwards, and the game Miles v. Forsyth ended in a draw after 64 moves. The fifth round was held the next day. Barnes defeated Grierson, Forsyth won his game with Jaquet, and the game between Forsyth and Grierson resulted in a draw. This practically decided the championship, as the scores then were: Barnes, 5 wins; Miles, 3_; Forsyth, 3; Jaquet 3; Edwards, 2; Grierson, 1_; Jowitt, 0. In the sixth round, which was commenced on New Year's Day and concluded January 2, Forsyth defeated Jowitt, Grierson beat Edwards, and the game between Miles and Barnes ended in a draw.
The total scores -were' as follow:— Barnes, 5_ wins; Miles, 4; Forsyth, 4; Jaquet, 3; Grierson, 2_; Edwards, 2; Jowitt. 0,
Barnes thus secured the championship and" the first prize of £20. Miles and Forsyth, who tied for second place, divided the second and third prizes, each receiving £7 10/. At the conclusion of the tournament a dinner was given in honour of the visiting chess-players.when the usual toasts were duly honoured.
