NEW ZEALAND MEETING.

The annual championship meeting under the auspices of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association was held on the Domain Cricket Ground on Wednesday, December 18. Auckland, as was fully expected, won the championship shield with Ss_ points, Canterbury being runner-up with 36. points, Wellington third with 16 points, and Dunedin fourth with 3 points. From an athletic point of view the meeting was a great success, the performances in most cases being of a high standard. In no less than nine events the official standard was either equalled or beaten. G. W. Smith, of Auckland, put up a fine performance In winning the 100 yards flat, 120 yards hurdles, and 440 yards hurdle events. In the first he ran the distance in the standard time of 10 l-ssec, while in the second he put up the good time of 16sec. W. F. Simpson, of Canterbury, won the mile and three-mile events in very hollow fashion, displaying form which was far too good for the Other competitors. The mile walk went to Barr-Brown, of Auckland, and the three-mile event to D- Wilson, also of Auckland, who was disqualified in the shorter event. Webster, the promising young Wellington runner, won the 220 yards and 440 yards events in 23 4-ss_c and 52 4-ssec respectively. E. T. Harper, of Canterbury, carried off the half-mile in 2min 2sec, while C. S. Harper, from the same province, accounted for the long jump (19ft Bin) and tied with C. C. Laurie, of Auckland, in the high jump (sft Bin). Laurie was the only competitor In the pole Jump, and retired after jumping the standard (10ft). W. H. Madill, of Auckland, accounted for the shot and hammer events, putting the shot 39ft and throwing the hammer 127 ft.
