JUBILEE INSTITUTE FOR ME BLIND.
The annual statutory meeting of the contributors of the Jubilee Institute for the Blind, Parnell, was held yesterday afternoon in the Victoria Arcade. Mr J. Thornes presided, and in a few opening remarks referred to the loss sustained by the Institute by the death of Air John Abbott. A number of inmates had expressed a wish to be allowed to board out, and the trustees had been trvinsr a system of piece-work to see if the men were capable of earning sufficient to support themselves. With regard to the recent inquiry by Mr H. W. Brabant, S.M., he said that every spiteful thing that could be said, and everything that had taken place during the past eleven years, had been raked up. The evidence had filled over 11,000 pages of type-written matter, and on this Mr Brabant had based his report, which was entirely favourable to the trustees and their management of the home. They had been endeavouring to carry out the improvements suggested by Mr Brabant, and hoped that in future there would be no cause for complaint. Referring to the new fireproof building, Mr Thornes said they already had some £2000 in hand, and they wanted the Government to grant the balance of the money required. Mr P. Lawry, M.H.E., hoped they would be able to induce the Government to grant the money at the uext session of Parliament. Messrs. C. E. Abbott, J. Reid, and J. L. Wilson, the retiring trustees, were re-electe-sl. It was resolved to hold the annual general meeting as early as possible after the close of the current financial year on March 31.
