ASHBURTON, Thursday,

At the Magistrate's Court to-day A. Whitaker, who had just become licensee of the Royal Hotel, was fined £ 5 and costs for permitting a Masonic banquet to be held in the house after hours without a permit. Witnesses for the prosecution deposedthat when the licensee found it was too late to get a permit he informed the banqueting committee that there would be no charge for liquor supplied. The Magistrate, however, said there had been a breach of the law, and fined the defendant £5, which he raised subsequently by one shilling, to allow an appeal. DUNEDIN, Thursday. At a meeting of the supporters of Mr. W. Earnshaw in the recent Caversham election, presided over by Mr. T. Fiddes, ex-Mayor, of South Dun-: edin, Mr. Earnshaw was presenteV_ with a purse containing 50 sovereigns, with more to follow, ih recognition of his plucky fight. Mr. Earnshaw re-, iterated the charges he had made dur*. ing the campaign, and intimated that he intended to return and win the seat at the general election.

An enquiry commenced before Mr Stratford, S.M. and a jury into the fire on December 22nd, when the late Major Brown's residence was destroyed. After the captain of the fire brigade and Mrs Brown had given evidence an adjournment was made to visit the scene of the fire.
