THAMES COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Thames County Council was held on Wednesday evening, the chairman (Mr T. A. Dunlop) presiding.

Disposal of Kauri Timber. —Cr. Corbett brought under notice the fact that the Crown Lands Department were selling a large number of kauri trees on the range between Puriri and Hikutaia. He thought an injustice was being done to the Council by the Department thus disposing of the timber, aad by cutting up the Council's roads in carting it. He moved, "That the Crown Lands Department be requested not to dispose of any more of the timber, which should be left for the Warden to dispose of as goldfields timber." Cr. Dunlop seconded. Cr. Corbett said that if this were done the revenue from the sale of the timber would belong to the Council, and would be of great use in maintaining the roads in good order. The resolution was carried.

Matatoke Road.—Cr. Bagnall said it was time the Council made arrangements to continue the Matatoke Road down to the Thames River. Mr. Brown, through whose land it would pass, was willing to grant land required free of cost to the Council, pro-, vided a slight deviation be made from the course already planned, and that the Council supply the fencing. He moved, " That the chairman and members of the riding, with the engineer, visit the proposed road for the purpose of deciding what should be done in the matter." The motion was seconded by Cr. Kilgour and carried.

Registrar of Dogs.—Mr. W. T. Newby was re-appointed dog registrar for the Hastings riding during the ensuing year, and Mr. S. Smith for the Parawai and Totara ridings.

Drainage.—With reference to the drainage of the Matatoke district, Cr. Corbett moved, aud Cr. Bagnall seconded, the following resolution, which was carried, "That'the engineer be instructed to convene a meeting of settlers residing within the Matatoke drainage district xo arrange for the expenditure of the rate to the best advantage, the work to be shewn on a plan of the district."
