LONDON, January 8
Colonel Colenbrander, with a small force, crossed Majoto Pass at night and surprised Field-Cornet Lonez at Waterval, killing five and capturing 29, despite the fact that thene were many Boers in the vicinity. Twenty Boers were wounded. The districts between Orange River and Thabanchu are clear of 13oers. Major-General C. Knox's column has moved to the north. Colonels Plumer and Spens drove a considerable force, under Christian Botha and Opperman from a position north of Amersfoort, in the Eastern Transvaal. A detachment under Major Valentine, an officer of much promise, suffered severely. Major Valentine and IS men were killed, and five officers and 28 men wounded. The Boers left nine dead. Colonel Williams surprised a laager at Upper Olifant's River, capturing 11, including Field-Cornet Breytenbach. Major Doris captured six Boers, SO waggons, and much stock at Mokjvani.
