THE CALEDONIAN SPORTS.
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—Permit me to correct an error in regards to your report re Mr A. Skinner's feats at the Caledonian sports. First, the hammer waa thrown with two hands, not one. Then, it was not a 561b. weight that was used, nor a 50 either, and the men that he competed against were all new chums at the game. Now, had he met anything of any reputation at the game then he could have honestly been proud of his perform- } ances, which undoubtedly were very! good, showing him to. be a master of . the art and knacks of inrowing the hammer and caber. I may take the. present opportunity of correcting an error which is prevalent at present, namely, that it is the best test of strength . you can find. This, I beg to correct, as science, not strength, _ proves the mastery on the field of" hammer-throwing, weight - putting, and caber tossing, as is proven by the fact that two of the strongest , men in New Zealand competed on New Year's Day, namely Blair and Hill, but, as neither had tried these;: games before, they had no show, but had they met Mr Skinner on a gymnasium floor with a full array of. heavy weights they would have shown him as many points at that as he showed them on New Year's; day, which proves that knack and: practice is all that is necessary to' win a Caledonian programme; and they take fine care they don't introduce any feats of strength where a man) of good physical envelopment. could show his superiority, and | more's the pity.—l am, etc., ONE WHO WAS THERE.
