ANNIVERSARY DAY. The Premier has approved the suggestion by the Mayor of Wellington that Anniversary Day ought to be observed throughout the province on the 23rd instant, instead of the 22nd, so as to avoid festivity on the date of Queen Victoria's death. ALLEGED ATTEMPTED SHOOTING. . George S. Styles is before the Magistrate's Court on a charge of having fired a gun at his daughter Lilian on 31st December at Belmont. The evidence of the police went to show that shots were found in trees and an outhouse in the direction where accused was stated to have discharged the gun at the girl. Styles was committed for trial. BUTTER EXPORTS. During the past six weeks about 2800 tons of butter and 900 tons of cheese, made in all parts of the colony, have been shipped home from Wellington. THE PACTBTC CABLE. The Government have been advised that the steamer Anglia will arrive in New Zealand waters in March to commence laying the Pacific cable from Doubtless Bay, 210 miles north, of Auckland, to Norfolk Island. The work of connecting juoubtless Bay with Auckland by telegraph is now in progress. It is expected that the Pacific cable will be opened for traffic about November next. STATE FARM AT WATRANGI. The Agircultural Department lhas decided to plant a further area of 200 or 300 acres of it's land at Warrangi, Waikato, with fruit trees, with a view to subdividing it into farms, to be leased to settlers likely to make fruit-growing a commercial success.
