A meeting of the Newton District Football Club is called for Tuesday, November 12th, in the training hall, to consider important business. ~

Some time back the executive of the Band of Hope Union Imported some books for the purpose of holding an examination. The books were full of useful instruction for every-day life, that for the senior grade being"Physiology and Temperance," by Wm. Nattress, M.D., M.E.C.S., Eng\, and authorised by the Educational Department of Ontario for u«je in public schools. The other, books were the Temperance Manual, by Chas. Whakley, and "Dr. Richardson's Band of Hope Catechism." The examination created a great amount of interest, being open to scholars attending1 public schools, Sunday-schools, members of Bands of Hope, and kindred societies—in fact, anyone wishing- to compete. Th,e committee are raising a prize fund of £35, an^d for fTfat purpose an entertainment is to be given in the Choral Hall next Thursday evening, when a large gathering of sympathisers and pleasure seekers will be treated by the Cooper and Macdermott Company and other friends.
