AUCKLAND RACING CLUB

SECOND DAY

' The .second day's events in connec tion with the Spring Meeting of the Auckland Racing1 Club were run today at Ellerslie. A strong southerly wind was blowing all the morning, which made things unj>leasant to the assemblage, which, soon after the business of the day had commenced, had grown into a thoroughly representative one. Sir Hector Muedonald

arrived on the course just after the first race was ended. The General

was accompanied by Captain Boscawen, Hon. A.D.&., and Mr Kidd, Mayor of Auckland, and vice-presi-dent of the club. The distinguished visitor was conducted to the stewards' stand by Messrs'!. Morrin, 11. P. Gorrie and Percival (secretary). From this coign of vantage the Hurdle Race was viewed, after which General Macdonald was entertained in the stewards' room.

Turning to the races, Rosella won the Spring- Handicap, coming up with a brilliant run from the half dis-

'tance. Sundial and Val Rosa fought a grand finish, and but a few strides further on Zealous, who was travelling fast, would have been in front. Indeed, many thought that he had got into second place, but the judge's verdict was a head between the second and third, with Zealous half a head ofli fourth. The handicap race was a line one between the first three, and indeed interesting all through. Cavaliero covered himself with glory by carrying his big weight to the front in such fast time. As they went over the hill Sundial was still leading, with Val Itosa and St. Olga abreast,, 'half v length away, Hesper, who had got oft a little to the bad, going up into fourth position, just in front of Rosella. In this order they reached the turn, where liosclla, hugging the rail, was closing up. Sundial was still in front at the distance where Yal Rosa joined him, St. Olga and Hesper having had enough, Rosella a little further on was called on for a run, and getting up won cleverly by nearly two clear lengths, Yal Rosa beating- Sundial for second place by a head.
