Ladies and Gentlemen, — Having been requested by a number of Electors within this ward to be nominated for the Heat now vacant I beg to intimate that I am a candi date for the vacancy in the City Council caused by the . elevation of Mr Alfied Kidd to the Mayoralty. For the past 23 years I have seen the steady growth of this c'.ty in wealth, population, and importance, and knowIng that large areas of virgin soil still remain unoccupied north and south of tho city, and immediately tributary to it. I see no reason why that healthy growtn should not continue. I would therefore deem it an honour to take nn active part in the laying of the foundation? of this fast-growing and beautiful city. I d i sire but to see these foundations laid in a broad and liberal spirit. Many people are alarmed at the recent ertens'on of municipal franchise, but if there be honesty and fairness in mimic pal government, I see no cause for alarm in this •Jtenslon of interest. Should you honour me by returning me as one of your members, I shall try to be on the side of honesty and fairness My wish will be not to degrade the office of councillor. Yours faithfully, I PETER OLIPHANT. _Lower Symonds-st. J£AST WARD ELECTION.
