GAS VERSUS ELECTRICITY.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —I see by your paper that Mr. Upton stated at a meeting of the Gas Company that gas was ten times cheaper than electric light, and as the City Council are anxious to secure the electric light for the benefit of the citizens, I would feel obliged if Mr Upton would give us proof of this before we go into such a heavy undertaking, as I am anxious to have the cheapest and best light procurable for our badly-lit streets. To this end I have been getting as much information as possible, and find from a test made by the Board of Works for the district of Whitechapel as to the cost per lamp of 8 candle-power with gas at 2/6 per thousand, and electric light at ljd per unit, average time of burning 12 hours per day, for the year the cost of gas was 44/2, while electric cost 20/8 per year, or a saving of 23/6 in each lamp.—l am, etc,
J. H. HANNAN.
