ALL SAINTS', PONSONBY.
School cadets from Church-street and Eichmond Eoad paraded at AH Saints' yesterday morning. The congregation was a large one. The boys were advantageously placed in the two v/ings. The hymns suitable to the occasion were sung. The vicar, the Yen. Archdeacon Calder, preached from the words of I. Chron., xxix., 18. The Archdeacon pointed out that though the psalms and canticles were special to the occasion, the lessons were the lessons appointed for the day, and their appropriateness was very striking, David's impassioned prayer and charge to his people being moat suitable admonitions for all stages and all times. The word "khaki" had begun to mean Empire and loyalty, and it was for those who wore His Majesty's khaki to see that they improve in everything, that their very walk and carriage should have nothing of the "colonial slouch," and that whether in uniform or plain dress they should be in all ways an example to their fellows, and a credit tkj their school. The lesson of obedience being mastered, there came that of chivalry, which should | prevent a boy from descending to those petty meannesses, such as keeping on the inside of the path while a woman had to take the kerb, and throwing orange peel on the pavements, to the danger of unwary feet, the chivalry which made it a pleasure even to chop wood for overworked mothers, and so to lighten the toil of others. For the elders, they must remember that "this thing" referred to by David had its counterpart in the "Word" and the "Sacraments," the "Word" which taught of man's relation to God, and the Sacraments which were the realisation of that relation for all time.
