BOARD OF EDUCATION.

After we went to press yesterday the following business was transacted at the Education Board:

Retiring Allowances.—Mr. Bagnall moved: "That, in accordance with the request of the Hon. the Minister of Education, the Board hereby rescinds the resolution passed on the 17th of October, 1900, to regulate the granting of money allowances to teachers retiring from the Board's service by reason of ill-health or physical incapacity."—The motion was agreed to.

Selection of Teachers. —The secretary of the New Zealand Educational Institute wrote asking the Board if, when making a Belection of names of the applicants for a position, the names of the teachers recommended by the Inspector are included in the list forwarded to the School Committee. It was resolved to reply that the Board preferred to make its own decision in the matter.

New Schools.—Applications for. new schools were dealt with as under: Kawhia, deferred; Te Matai and Te Opu, referred to the inspector to report. Buildings.—Tenders for a new building at Awatura were declined, and the matter was deferred. Fencourt: It was decided to build the school.

Bonus Additions. —The Education Department wrote that the bonus additions would be granted on the third, quarter, and that the Department was willing1 that tha additions for the September period should be made on the basis of the June quarter.

Tender. —The tender of Mr. W. Hogan, of £102, was accepted for the removal of the teacher's house at Taotaoroa. Election. —Mr. Farrell referred to a circular issued to committees, with the intention of influencing them against the retiring members. He said that all three members had been diligent in their attendance, and that during his term he had not missed a meeting of Board or committee. The other charges were injurious, and tended to prevent capable men offering their services. The ot'ner members all condemned the issue of such a circular.
