THE FUTURE COMMANDANT.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —Owing doubtless to my lack of knowledge of the art of punctuation my letter on the "Future Commandant," as printed in your issue of last Friday, appeared somewhat mixed. Fifteen pounder pompoms, etc., should read fifteen P.R. (pounders), pompoms, and maxims. Again, over energetic action, on the part of your linotype machine, duplicated the words torpedoes and submarine mines, making it appear that I would have these ship destroying agents attached to a mobile field force. My desire was to point out that the engineer, artillery and torpedo services require a special training, that no amount of S.A. campaigning can possibly impart; but that the commandant of an armed and mounted volunteer field force might well be a leader with only a knowledge of mankind, an eye for country, and a profound belief in the killing power of the long range, low trajectory Mauser rifle. As for the pomp and circumstance of church parades . and other pageants, any curly haired society poodle, Jew or Gentile,, might suit the sitviation, and take, -command. —I am, etc.,

SPHINX.
