RUSSIAN STUDENTS "VANISH."

STRANGE STOKY OF A SPY

ST. PETERSBURG, Monday, May 12.

A quite extraordinary excitement has been created In St. Petersburg society by the following occurrence:—

The new Minister of Education, General Vannoffsky, on his return from Moscow recently, summoned 20 students to his private house, had a long, fatherly talk with them, and asked thorn to put their grievances and complaints clearly before him.

Among the students were some who were Intelligent, outspoken men, and they succeeded In thoroughly opening the eyes of the Minister us to the gross behaviour of the police.

A couple of days later the Minister wished to have another tulk with two of tho students, and summoned them again to bis house. But they had entirely and completely disappeared. Not a soul knew where they had gone.

General Vannoffsky immediately Informed the Czar, who ordered all possible lnq, ulrlet to be made, but nothing was discovered.

The general opinion is that these students have been pirt away or hidden by the police because they bad dared to impugn the ofli-

cial conduct to the Minister.

General Vannoffsky is thoroughly disgusted that even in bis private house he is apparently beset with spies, and the matter will not be allowed to rest until the whole truth is revealed.—"Dully Mail."
