INTERESTING DISCOVERY MADE BY THE CABLE STEAMER.

News from Norfolk Island states that the steamer Britannia arrived on the 12th inst. Soundings taken on the trip across from Brisbane disclosed generally a very suitable ottom for lay* ing the cable. Deep soundings taken gave a depth of 2i miles. A large range of mountains was discovered, KSOO feet high, 60 miles long, and thirty miles in breadth. 'The cable will have to go round the mountains. It is proposed to land the cable at Alisons Bay, where the company have secured 100 acres of land. It is understood Norfolk Island will be a repeating1 station, and a large staff will be kept there.
