CONFERENCE RE FERRY SERVICES.

A meeting- of delegates from the Auckland City Council, the Devonport and Birkenhead Boroug-h Councils, and the Waitemata County Council, was held yesterday afternoon in the Municipal Buildings, to consider what steps should be taken in regard to the operation of the ferry services under the regulation of the new Municipal Corporation Act. There were present Messrs J. H. Hannan, A. E. Glover, and A. Rosser from the City Council; Malcolm Niccol, E. W. Alison,. J. W. Walker, and K. Duder, from the Devonport Borough Council; J H. V^theford, A. Keys, and W. Wallace, from the Birkenhead Borough Council; and Messrs Bruce and Wilson from the Waitemata County Council. Mr Malcolm Niccol occupied the chair.

At the commencement some doubt was expressed as to the position of the Waitemata County Council in regard to the regulation of the ferryservice, as this power is granted by the Municipal Corporations Act, and not by any Act conferring powers on county councils.

It was moved by Mr Hannan, and seconded by Mr Glover, that delegates from the Waitemata County Council be admitted to the conference pending legal advice on the subject. Mr Bosser moved, "That a sub-com-mhtee of two members from each of the bodies represented be elected to enquire and report on the position." Mr Glover seconded.

Mr Hannan moved as an amendment, "That all the delegates form a committee," and called for a division. Messrs Hannan, Wallace, Keyesj Bruce, Wilson and Duder voted for the amendment, and Messrs Niccol, Roaser, Alison, Glover, Walker, and Witßeford against. The voting was equal, so the dialr-

man gave his vote against the amend- I ment, which was accordingly lost. The following committee was then elected:—Messrs Keyes and Wallace, j Birkeniead; Messrs Kidd and Glover, City; Messrs Bmce and Wilson, Waitemata; and Messrs Mccol and Walker, Devonport. It was decided that, "The opinion | of Mr T. Cotter, solicitor, be taken as ; to the position of the Waitemata i County Council," and it was agreed j that the remaining six delegates of j the committee meet next Wednesday, ; at 3 p.m.. in the event of its being j found that the Waitemata County j Council has no legal right to be repre- ! sented. It was resolved, on the motion of | Mrllannan,"That all meetings of dele- J gates and committees be open to the j public and press."
