THE LASH.

(To the Editor.) Sir.-We know it is not quite fair to expect you to give business people a free advertisement, bur m last night's "Star" your correspondent «G*« makes a somewhat prominent u?e of the terms "Messrs. Earl and Co and this comes so near to the title under which we carry on our tea. business that those of your readers who have not closely watched your correspondence columns may conclude that we are taking a part in this questionable controversy, which is not so, as we just mind our own business, feeling quite satisfied that Judge Conoily can mind his.—We are, etc., JOHN EARLE & CO. Auckland, 22nd June, 1901.

(To the Editor.)

gj rj —-\vill you spaire me a small space in your paper in consequence of the correspondence re the lash, many of which seem to be off the point? What has caused it? Why, the very heavy sentence passed upon the unfortunate man Aubrey, whose case I am glad to see is being taken up in the proper place and in a proper manner. No ona of any sense at all for a moment would say that such crimes should not be put down and punished as they deserve, but, on the other hand, everyone should resent a sentence which is excessive, which has occurred in the opinion of very many in the case in question. Had the man had a counsel things would have been brought to light which would have put quite a different colour on the affair, and I expect will be now. There are many who would not hesitate to sign a petition to have "the sentence reduced, or re-tried with a counsel. Thanking you in anticipation for inserting these few remarks, I am, etc., ,

W. HERBERT.
