HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
The annual meeting- of the Auckland Horticultural Society took placelast night in the Victoria Arcade, Mr Hosking presiding. The committee's report stated that b,y careful management it had been found possible to pay prize-money in full, extinguish liabilities left over from the previous year, and to close with a satisfactory, balance in the bank, this being- 'the first occasion since its inauguration that the society had been in possession of an actual surplus. The usual two shows were held in November and April, on both occasions at the Choral Hall. The summer show, on the 23rd; and 2rith "of November, proved an excellent exhibition, the -exhibits exceeding in number anything previously staged by the socety. It was suggested that a smaller "schedule, .with' increased prize-money, might lead to keener competition in the. adult section. During the past year the committee established a lending library for the use of members. In addition to a number of volumes on plants and flowers, all the important English and American papers will be found on the shelves. As regards the prospects for the ensuing year, the outlook was decidedly hopeful, and the committee had every confidence in the continued stability of the society.
The statement of accounts showed receipts £I(J3 10/2, and the expenditure left a credit balance of £22 5/1. The report and balance-sheet were adopted.
