WELLINGTON NOTES.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.); j
WELLINGTON, this day. \ OFFICERS OF THE CROWN. It is understood that there will b«' no necessity owing to the death, of the late Queen to reswear magistrates justices of the peace, volunteers, offtl cials, etc., etc., the existing law providing for the circumstances. SOMETHING. NEW. A very practical innovation was introduced to-day in a case of alleged. cruelty against a school teacher of a suburban school rejoicing in the pic. turesque cognomen of Neptune Mul. ville. The pupil, aged eight years, picked up a threepenny piece on going into school, which he concealed and refrained . from giving up when the master ordered the finder of the coid to stand. For this the offender John. McNeil!, was flogged by .\~ep! tune, not with a trident, but a regu. lation cane on the hands and \back. The feature of the case was that a photograph of the boy's body, showing the bruises, was put in evidence. It was urged on behalf of the defendant that discolouration was no proof of. excessive punishment, though it was admitted that the cas* tigation was severe. Several teachers gave evidence exculpating the defendant. The. magistrate reserved judgment. .
