In another column the rescue from drowning of a man named Kattearns is reperted, and it is stated that a young- man assisted. We have learned since that page went to press that the young man was Mr Robert Scantlebury, chief petty officer of H.M.S. Archer. He was walking up the wharf in company with a young lady, when the cry was raised that a man had fallen into the water. He took off his coat, handed it to the young lady, and jumped overboard. The same fine fellow, we learn, was ou the scene of the fire at the Grand Hotel at an early stage, and searched one room on the ground floor to see if there was anyone there overcome by the smoke. He entered and left by a side window in the brick wall, which a few minutes later fell against the Masonic Hall. Ou entering the hotel Scantlebury left a new cap just outside the hotel, and when he went to pick it up again it had disappeared. • _j l. ■ *,'. .. >_j
