LICENSING BENCH.

EDEN.

The annual meeting of the Eden Licensing Court took place yesterday. Present:—Mr H. W. Brabant, S.M., chairman, Messrs M. Niccol (Mayor of Devonport), •G. L. Peacocke, J. Bollard, M.H.R., R. Duder.

Flagstaff Hotel. —Mr Clayton applied for a license for Catherine Lindsay for this hotel, and also a transfer Peter Lelaney to Catherine Lindsay. The police report stated tbe bouse required painting and papering throughout. Fire escapes were satisfactory, and, the furniture in good condition. Mr Clayton said the Great Northern Brewery Company was prepared to do whatever the committee required. _t was intended to erect an entirely new house. Mr Peacocke said the building in its present state was quite out of -place. Mr Mowbray, managing director of the company, said that in a week or two designs would be called for the new building, which would be subtinitted at tbe quarterly meeting.

Mr Peacocke considered the license should only be granted on condition that the. new building was started. Constable Williams said he considered the building should be renovated at once. Mr Clayton suggested that the license be granted until the next quarterly meeting, and by that time the plans for a new building would be. submitted. Ho had just been upstairs, and thought it scarcely required renovation. It was agreed to grant fhe license for three months, plans to be submitted at the quarterly meeting for the new building. j

Northcote Hotel.—Mr Easley applied to have the license of the Northcote Hotel transferred from W. F. Brown to Thomas Allen. The police report stated the house was in good condition, with ample fire escapes. The. transfer was granted, and also a renewal to Mr Allen.

Arch Hill Hotel.—Arthur Dempsey applied for a renewal of a license for tbe Arch Hill Hotel. The police report stated the house was fairly furnished, bedrooms clean, three fire escapes and a ladder. The outside of the house required painting, passage papering, and a bath-room erecting. Mr. 0. Nicholson assured the Court that these works would be completed by next quarterly meeting, and on these conditions the renewal was j granted.

Avondale Hotel.—Mrs Amy Stych applied for a renewal of the license for the Avondale Hotel. Constable Creen reported the house clean, in good repair, and ample fire escapes. Lake Hotel.—B. C. Roberts applied for a renewal of the bcense of the Lake Hotel. The police report was satisfactory, the fire escapes being ample. Mr J. R. Reed appeared. The application was granted.

Masonic Hotel.—A. J. Grattan (Mr J. R. Reed) applied for a renewal of the license of this hotel. The police report being satisfactory the application was granted.

New Lynn Hotel.—Air O. Nicholson applied for a renewal of the license of this hotel to T. Hertz. The police report suggested certain small repairs, which, being promised, the renewal was granted.

The hotels at Devonport were granted eleven o'clock licenses, Avondale, New Lynn, and Lake 10 o'clock. Mr Basley applied for an 11 o'clock license for the Northcote Hotel. Constable Knowles objected on the ground that with 10 o'clock licenses in Auckland it would mean people coming over to Northcote staying until 11 o'clock at the hotel and walking home, making the district rowdy. Mr Allen, being called, deposed that a large number of residents in Northcote had to leave Auckland at 9.30. In scores of instances he had to shut the door in the face of the people. He denied that since he had the house there had been any rowdyism. Mr Peacocke argued that Northcote should be treated the same as Devonport. Mr Niccol said be was at Northcote recently and found the hotel shut punctually at 10, so he had to wait outside an hour till the next boat. The application was granted.
