It was decided some time ago to erect in the Albert Park a marble fountain as a. suitable memorial to tbe late G. M. Reed. A design was prepared by Messrs. Mitchell and Watt, architects, and the work of erecting entrusted to Messrs. Parkinson, monumental masons, of Victoria-*treet. Mr Kirchner, of Wakefield-street, has carefully carried out all the plumbing and metal work. A marble statuette of a fisher girl was presented by Messrs. Buchanan, and the fountain has been made to provide a pedestal for that pretty piece of sculpture. The base i_ made from a block of Timaru stoneresting on a cement concrete foundation, while the remainder of the fountain is of white veined Italian marble. Immediately above the base is concealed a cistern, which holds about six gallons of water, delivered at the sides through special lever nickel-plated taps, into ma rble basins, to which are chained nickel-plated goblins bearing the inscription: "Pray! Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow," and "Strive for God, Home, and Humanity." The gun-metal plate at the front is as follows: "Erected in loving remembrance of G. M. Reed, of Auckland, journalist, 1901," followed by the couplet "For the cause that lacked assistance, and the good that he could do." The centre of the fountain is left open in the form of an arch, to give access to tbe cistern, and is surmounted by a keystone. The top is a cornice and blocking shaped .to receive the statuette. The total height to the top is 12 feet. The ground is to be laid out in concrete, tarred over, in the design of a star, with shell and shingle alternating. To-morrow the fountain will be formally handed over to the city. Mr D. Goldie, ex-Mayor, has consented to ipake the presentation, and His Worship the Mayor will receive the gift on behalf of the tit-zens of A-aekJand.
