CONDITIONS OF LABOUR.

CTo the Editor.)

Sir, —Permit me a small space in the columns of your ■'valuable paper in furtherance of your own motto, "for the cause that lacks assistance." The point on which I wish to have a little Kay is the rate of wages paid in this large town. lam very pleased to see that a step in the right direction ha« been taken by the timber workers here by fixing a scale of decent wages by which a man can live with his family when the rate of house rent is taken into consideration, which is a very high One. I .think that it is a scandalous thing to see big, strong and active men having to work for the sum of 6/ or 6/6 per day. Every other trade or calling have formed themselves into unions and sought the ruling of the Conciliation Board o'\ their behalf, and I fail to See why a meeting of all the labouring -classes should not be held and fix a scale of wages in reason, and one that Would be fair to both man and his master; that is, I should say, there should not be less than 7/ per d&y, and at the discretion of the employer, if ho saw that he had some men who had a little more ability than others, he could advance them a little more if he thought fit to. do so,—l am, etc., 'A: WGB£m<s MAN.
