THE VERANDAH QUESTION.

At a .special meeting1 of the CityCouncil held last night, Cr. P. "Dig-nan presiding1, the following1 .by-law was adopted:— "1. No person shall stand^ walk, sit, or be, or remain, upon the roof of any verandah or portico, erected over any footpath, or other portion of any street, within the City of Auckland. 2. The above provision shall not apply to any person actually engaged in erecting, repairing, or painting any such verandah, or portico, or any part thereof, and who shall have obtained from the City Engineer written permission so to do, Nor shall it apply to any person on a verandah or portico, when a public procession or celebration is taking place in the street in front thereof, if such verandah or portico shall have been examined by the City Engineer, and he shall have issued a certificate or permit (then in force and uncancelled), stating the number of such verandah or portico will safely bear, and there shall not be at such time thereon a greater mimber of persons than stated in such certificate or permit. 3. The 'City Engineer' means the person from time to time holding the appointment of engineer to the said body corporate, and the said certificate or permit may from time to time be altered, withdrawn, or cancelled by the said City Engineer. 4. This by-law shaJl come into operation on June S, 1901." Mr Garratt moved as an amendment. "That for any breach of the by-law any magistrate, before whom such

breach may be heard, may inflict a fine not exceeding £5, nor less than 25/."
