REAR-ADMIRAL REMEY'S RECEPTION.

Tn response to invitations forward, ed, a large number of Auckland's leading- citizens attended the recep. tion of Rear-Admiral Remey and his officers on board the United States flagship Brooklyn yesterday afternodn, the result being- a brilliant assemblage and a most enjoyable fun e . tion, nothing being left undone that ' would tend to add to the pleasure and comfort of the guests. The re. ceptioh lasted from 3 to 5 o'clock ' the majority of the visitors going jOff in "the p.s. Eagle, which had been provided for that purpose. The ship's launches were, however, nun ning during- the afternoon for the convenience of those who were unable to go by the ferry steamer. Bear. Admiral Remey received the guests, each in turn being introduced by the United States Consul, Mr. F. Billing^ ham, and Mrs. TOllingham. who-stoofl beside the host, with Captain Diekson ori the other side. As soon as the formal reception was over Mr, BiJ. lingham announced that Rear-Ad-miral Remey had wished him to inti« mate that the whole of the shin-was thrown : open to the visitors. The officers then took charge of the guests, showing them all over the fine vessel, and explaining various matters of in. terest,' The. vessel had" been most tastefully decorated for the oceasip'ii, the deck being covered with awnings, and the flags gracefully draped aiid grouped in such a manner from the awnings to the bulwarks as to shield the ladies from the wind. Innumerable seats were placed about also covered with bunting, and the general good effect was heightened by the tiny coloured electric lights, which were hung, all around underneath the awning. The fine string band of the Brooklyn discoursed music, and when sufficient guests had gone below to look Over" the ship, advantage was taken of the clearance of the upper deck to have some dancing, Captain Dicksort being the first to open the ball; In the lower deck ample refreshments were furnished the guests, including the indispensable afternoon tea for the ladies. Shortly, before 5 o'clock the guests began'to leave, and Rear-Admiral Remey stood at the gangway to bid farewell to each visitor. As the ferry steamer started shorewards three hearty cheers were given for the Admiral, a compliment which he responded to by raising his hat in salute.
