23 Houses Destroyed.

WELLINGTON, Thursday.
The most extensive "fire that has occurred in Wellington since ISB7, broke out on Mount Victoria, a new residential quarter of Wellington, at two o'clock this morning, and destroyed virtually the whole of the residential block fronting Hawker, Shannon, and Moeller streets, besides all but two or three houses on the east side of Shan-non-street, and also several on the west side of Hawker-street. Twenty-three bouses in all were burnt, covering axi area of between two and three acres. Amongst them were those of: — Mr Devine, solicitor. Mr Rowe, public librarian. Mr Freyfoerg, timber expert. "The He/9. lE. Hales, pastor of the Church of Christ. Mr Earroch, schoolmaster., Mr Kowe also lost his private of 55/)0 volumes, valued at £1300.
The house of Mr Grundy (schoolmaster) was the only one saved out of the main block, and this is in a ruined
condition
The inmates of the houses destroyed lost practically everything-.
