Last nig-ht a safe in the office of Mr A. Bullick, merchant, was broken into, and a sum of £40 stolen.
The Premier told a deputation of dairymen that the question of an appeal from the decision of the Inspector would be referred to the Minister for Agriculture; also' that dairy companies would be brought tinder the regulations, where competing with individual dairymen.
Mr Seddon informed the Hon. C. C. Bowen that the magnetic observatory would be established at Christchurch in time to be of use to the Antarctic expedition.

At the Supreme Court, Walter Smith was found guilty of assaulting- his wife, with intent to do her grievous bodily harm, and was sentenced to five years' imprisonment.
DUNEDIN, this day.
At a meeting- of the Chamber of Commerce Committee, the subcommittee appointed to consider the articles of association of the proposed federation of Chambers of Commerce throughout the colony reported that they were unable to recommend the Chamber to join the association. The report was adopted.
GISBORNE, this day.
The Borough Council is considering the question of the establishment of municipal abattoirs. It is proposed to utilise the Gisborne Freezing Works, but the butchers object on the grounds of inconvenience of site 3nd also as to the terms offered.
TIMARU, this day.
The Hon. Major Steward is now visiting his electorate. Yesterday, at the request of the occupants of the new Government Settlement, Pareora No. 2, he inspected their water race, which they say was an inducement to apply for allotments, and that the race proves to be useless. Major Steward promised to endeavour to get the Government engineer sent to inspect it. Last evening Major Steward addressed a meeting" of electors at St. Andrew, explaining the chief measures of last session, and indicating the probable work of next session. He will re-introduce the Elective Executive Bill. With regard to federation, he argued it would be unwise for New Zealand to join the Commonwealth.
