SCHOONER AND CUTTEB

INVERCARGILL. Wednesday.
On Sunday last the schooner Cava« lier, owned and sailed by Roderique> of Riverton, was in Mason Bay, on thf west side of Stewart Island, making a trip, to bring1 back the mutton-birdets, when a heavy gale came on. and ia attempting to run for shelter at Natm Island, the jib carried away. TBJs made her partially unmanageable, aid in passing through the narrow chanMel she struck' and soon sank. RoderiqtH! and the crew of two men got ashore safely in a dingy, and spent a miserable night under the upturned boat. Next day they made Charlton's homestead, and thence walked across to Patersotfs Inlet on Tuesday, catching the mail steamer to-day, and returning to the Bluff. The Maoris on the islands are likely to be suffering considerable hardships, as the weather has been almost unprecedentedly inclement for five weeks. The Cavalier is valued at fioOO.and was not insured.
The cutter Bapid drove from the: I anchors in the same gale, and went Jo pieces in Henrietta Bay.. Ruapuke. She was owned by Mr Newton, a resident;, on the island. . . ? It is not knowu what steps will be taken to bring back the muttonbirders. Fen- some years they were carried by the harbour tug-, but that ; arrangement .was departed from this year. ...
