— a, KINDERGARTEN WORK,
At the Wellesley-street School last evening the Eev. E. C. Isaacs, inspector for manual instruction under the Education Department, lectured before a large attendance of primary school teachers, Mr. T. U. Wells, Institute president, being in the chair. The lecturer referred to the dicta, "Look and learn," "Hear and learn," and stated that to them must be added handle and learn. The inspector said the Department' intended to abolish drawing books and introduce a system of "freearm" drawing on blackboards. He then explained various forms of kindergarten work, which the Department is introducing under the Technical Education Act. Blocklaying, paper folding and mounting, cardboard work and plasticene were dealt with, practical examples being given. The lecturer explained technical points when questioned. Mr. It. Crowe, inspector, said that if about six subjects were deleted from the overcrowded syllabus there might be some chance for the introduction of plasticene. Mr. Isaacs stated that alternative syllabuses would be put before teachers, who could take up manual training if they desired.
