CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

The new Council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce held their first meeting yesterday afternoon at. the Chamber's offices, Victoria Arcade. Mr D. R. Caldwell (President) presided, and there were! also present Messrs Carl Seegner, J. Reid, A. H. Nathan, G. Fowlds, M.H.R., T. Finlayson, Graves .Aickin, J. Gunsoiv J. Hardie, J. Wiseman, M. A. Clark, S. Vaile and Campbell. Small Birds Pest.—lt was decided to receive a deputation from the Auckland Fruitgrowers' Conference re the prohibition of the importation of small birds, owing to the injury done by these birds to the fruit, of the province. East Coast Service.—The Chairman reported a conference which he had with the acting-manager of the Union S.S. Cu. In which that gentleman promised to look into the matter of Auckland grievances in this respect, and make an improvement if possible. 'Frisco Mail. —Mr Graves Aickin brought up the question of the inconvenient hour at which the 'Frisco mail closes on Saturdays. He proposed that the Council endeavour to get the PostmasterGeneral to change the hour from eleven to twelve o'clock, and to make representations to the Union Steamship Company on the question. Notice of Motion.—Mr S. Vaile gave notice to move: (1) "That in the opinion of this Council the time has arrived when the construction of the Auekland-Manu-kau Canal should bo taken in hand." (2) "That with a view to giving effect to the above resolution a deputation consisting of the President and Vice-President and the mover wait upon the Harbour Board and confer with them as to the steps necessary to be taken in this matter." Committees.—ln order to expedite the Chamber's business committees were appointed as follows for the ensuing year:— Railways and Finance, Messrs Vaile, Aickin, Ewington, Kent, and Campbell; Importers, Messrs A. H. Nathan, W. H. Smith, Hardie and Finlayson; Exporters, Messrs Mitchelson, Seegner, Aickin; Manufacturers. Messrs Clark, Wiseman, Mennie and Fowlds; Produce and Shipping, Messrs • Gunson, Reid, Philson and Robert on.
