Sir James Hector and the Hon. W. Rolleston, who came to Auckland to attend the session of the Senate of the University of New Zealand, returned to the South by the Rotoiti to-day. An elderly woman named Mrs Jane McDonald, lodging- at Mrs Scow's house, Wakefield-street, attempted to commit suicide last evening by poisoning herself with matchheads. She was removed to the hospital for treatment, where she is reported to be out of danger.
