BUILDERS' UNION

The Builders' Union picnic fit Motutapu on Saturday passed off very successfully. The arrangements ■were carried out under the management of the committee of the Builders" Union, while the entertainment of the children was in the hands of Messrs. J. Rhodes, 11. Small, G. Carter, and J. Rosser. The committee entertained the visitors to afternoon tea, while toys were given'to the children. Races were held during- the afternoon, for prizes presented by Messrs J. Burns and Co., Blakey, Hill and Plummet", T. and S. Morrin, and Briscoe, Macneil and Co. The events, resulted as follows: Boys, under 15 years: G. Brown. 1; C. Wright, 2. Girls, under 17: E. A number of races for the. children were run under the management of Messrs. Bartlett, 1-3. Louis, G. Reid, and T. Jones. On the return trip the pre.sident, Mr A. Bartlett, distributed the prizes to the winners.

A picnic took place on Saturday to Mr Joseph Carge's farm, East Tamaki, iv connection- with the Beresford-st. Cpngregational Church. About ninety attended, including- the new pastor, 7iev. John \Vilkins, and his family. One brake left town at 10.30 o'clock, and three others at one p.m. to suit the convenience of those who were unable to g-et away in the morning-. On Saturday last the Tonson (!arlick Co.'s factory employees held their annual picnic. Leaving- Auckland by the eight o'clock express, the party proceeded to Mercer, vvnere they crossed the river to the beautiful island opposite. A most enjoyable day was spent, boats and canoes being engaged £or the use of the picnickers, many of whom spent most of the day exploring the beautiful scenery on the Waikato. On shore a. first-class programme of sports was carried out in a manner which* reflected credit on the members of the sports committee. The principal event, the Imperial Handicap, was won by.ll. Mens, the prize being a handsome clock, donated by the warehouse staff. The apprentices' race went to G. Simpson, and the men's and boys' swimming races were won by W. Nurse and J. Payne respectively. The ladies' race, after a most exciting finish, was won by Hiss Hedges. A picnic was held by the members of the Ponsonby Cruising Club at j Kohimarama on Saturday afternoon, ; and was largely attended. The steamer Osprey, with some 400 excursionists ,went down to the. picnic j-iace accompanied by a large number of yachts. A sports programme was held during the afternoon, under the superintendence of Messrs F. Kunst, L. Schischka, and B. P. Karkins, and others, and afternoon tea and an enjoyable concert was given.
