Parnell batted first, but could do little against the Auckland bowling, and were all out for the poor total of 95. The batting was poor throughout. ' Clayton was in good form with the ball, taking 5 wickets for 30 runs. Auckland started badly, and had the greatest difficulty in scoring for the first half hour or so. Hemus (22), Holland (20 not out) and Qnentery (14) Improved matters, and at the call of time five wickets were down i'or 74. G. Youll. the Sydney player, who made his iirst appearance for Parnell, failed with the. bat, but proved very difficult with the ball, and the Auckland batsmen were never thoroughly at home to him. The match at present bears an open aspect. The scores are as follows: — PARNELL.—First Innings. I. Mills, b R. Neill 13' F. J. Otlson, lbw, b Clayton 12 T. Elliott, c Quentery, b Clayton 5 G.
