RIFLE MATCH.

ling- match was fired at the ou nted Rilies range, Penrose,

on k.:aauay last, between teams representing the'married and single men of the company. Tho benedicts were successful in securing 12 points in the aggregate more than their opponents. The highest scores lor the married men were Sergt.-Major Potter 51, Trooper Atkinson 41, Corporal Ferguson and Lance-Corporal Salmon each 34, and for the single men Trooper Everard 42, Trooper Dick 40, and Lieut. Wynyard 89, which must be considered very fair shooting considering the strong, gusty winds that prevailed. This company intend devoting considerable attention to match shooting now that they hav-e finished both their class and volley firing, which they have fortunately been enabled to do through being in possession of a ; range of their own, WHANGAREI NOTES. As an excellent final the Whangarei volunteers closed their week's encamp- : merit on Thursday evening with a sham- j ; fight. Sergt.-Major Hoar acted as umpire,; ; and the victory was given in favour of | ' the attacking party. Lieut. McGregor was! j congratulated on the situation of the posi-i ; tion he occupied, which, if held in real \ warfare, would have been almost untenI able. Capt. Steadmnn was also congratui iated on the excellent way he carried out I his manoeuvre and handled the men un-j I'der his charge. The company were then! j marched into camp, which broke up on j Friday morning. On Friday evening the officers and noni commissioned officers of the "Whangarei j i Rifles entertained Sorjrt.-Major Hoar with; • :: smoke concert, to which the officers and: ! non-commissionoi! officers of the Marsden Mounted Rifles were invited, also Mr R. i Thompson, M.H.R., avid His Worship the ! Mayor (Mr \V. Comes), tho Chaplain (Rev. | iL. L. Cubitt), hon. surgeon (Dr. Sweet), and various lvon. members. Songs were, rendered by Messrs Hicks, Wilson, Hurle, Smith and Bedlington. instrumental selections were given,by Mr P. C. Calken (cornet), Mr Smiers (piano). A very enjoyable evening was spent and the party broke up at 11 p.m. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday volley and independent, tiring of the Marsden Mounted"Rilles took place, Sergt.-Major Hoar taking charge of firing parties. Some fair shooting- has been done. lOn Thursday the Whangarei Rifles completed their, volley and independent firing, with fair results.
