PROPOSED RESTRICTIONS ON

STUDENTS

A DECISION REVERSED

At the sitting of the N.Z. University Senate yesterday afternoon, the

Chancellor formally conferred the degree ot LL.B. on Wm. L. Moore, una the degree of B.Sc. ou 11. C. Boyflell.

The resolution had been carried by the easting vote of the Chancellor, and ir was a resolution that would be a disturbing- element in the. University. He would vote against the present proposal and against Professor Cook's resolution being embodied in a statute.

Dr. Fitchett held that the existing regulations were sufficient lo prevent abuses.

The committee reported in favour of the Pill amended, so that the restriction should apply only to Term Time. The Senate divided on tiie question, with the result that the Bill was (brown out by nine votes to eight. The voting was as follows:—Ayes: (rot. Brown, Mr Cohen, Prof. Cook - . The following bills were read a third time and passed:—-Bill to amend statute of the I'.owea prize; Bill to amend statute of junior scholarships (substituting amongst other matters 1000 marks for German for lli.- TiiO marks formerly assigned); ilili to amend the John Tinline scholarship: Dill to amend statutes of B.A. and B.Sc, degree in geology; Bull to amend statute honours in arts E; Bill lo amend the statutes for the law and medical examinations: Bill to amend the. .statute., degree of bachelor of science in engineering- (establishing a degree of B.Sc. in electrical engineering-). Mid Bills to make minor alterations in various .statutes.
