THIS DAY. (Before Mr 11. W. Brabant, S.M.) Drunkenness—Three iirst offenders were discharged with a caution. L<'r:ink 'thornton and Joseph Jackson were each lined 5/ or "t hours' imprisonment in default, while Matthew Can-oil and _clward Moore were each lined 10/ or « hour, in default. Mary Campbell was fined 20/ or 7 days in default. One iirst offender, who did not appear, was fined 10/, the amount to be deducted from the ball money. Travelling Without Payment.—A rlnur David. Lewis Jackson. Henry Mivwson, Thomas Woodside Easdale, Hush O'Douald Henry Lewis. John Purdy and John Coiinell. were charged that between February 28th and March 22nd they did travel on the s.s. Sonoma, between Sydney and Auckland without having previously paid their fares. The purser of the Stroma asked for the charge to be pressed as the practice was becoming common. Accused were each lined £1, the amount of the fare, or one month's Imprisonment in deAssault.— George Roseal, a seaman from H.M.s. Archer, now in harbour, appeared to answer a double charge of having assaulted Constable Cahill and Constable Harvey by kicking them on the legs.— Sub-Inspector Mitchell asked that accused might be made an example of, in order that the police might be protected from assaults of this kind. The constables' r#idence showed that accused when arretted for desertion, was very violent, and deliberately kicked them on tho legs. He also tried to incite his mates to attack them. His Worship said that assaults of this kind must bo put down, and he would sentence accused to one month's imprisonment on each charge, sentences to be consecutive.
