A MEDICAL STUDENT'S EXPERIENCES.
Mr A. C. Owen, who was with one of the field hospitals in South Africa for some months, but is now back studying at Edinburgh, in a letter to his father, Mr G. VV. Owen, gives some interesting particulars ot a tornprior to returning to England. He "I went from'Norvals Pont to De Aar, and from there to Khnberley, passing en route over the fields ot! Grasspan and Belmont, where large battles were fought in the earlier part of the war. At Modeler Ewer I stayed two days examining the trenches and other remains of the stubborn battle folight there. While at Modder Eiver I got the loan of a horse, and went over to Magersfontein, that awful place where you will remember General Wauchope and so many of the Highland Brigade fell. I spent a whole day going over the place, and was much struck by the clever way in which the Boer trenches were constructed. I picked up some pieces of shell there, and also a lot of bullets at Modder Eiver. In Kimberley I stayed a week; a very enjoyable week it was, too. I went all over the De Beers diamond mines, and I had in my hand.the diamonds that had been taken out of the mine up till 1 o'clock . that day. The value of them was £20,000: one diamond alone was valued at £1200. I went to see Mr Ehodes' house, and other places and things of interest. On my way back to Norvals Pont I stayed at Colesburg a day. Colesburff is a very pretty place, and. as you will remember, was occupied by the Boers for five' months. Coles-Kop. where the British put two guns un, is twelve or sixteen hnnrlrpcl feet hi<rh. and ns straight as the side of a house. Tt is wonderful how the runs were ever placed there." Mr Owen is now at work again in Edinburgh.
