THE PAINTING TRADE,

BOARD'S FINDING ACCEPTED. !

By mutual concession and display of a conciliatory spirit on each side, the dispute in the painting trade; has . been amicably arranged, the finding of the Board, given this morning, be.'ng accepted by the representatives present, both of the Master Painters*. Guild and the Auckland House Painters' Union. The finuing of the Board was.given at 10 o'clock this morning, when there were present the Cnairmaa (Rev. A* li. Coilinsj, Messrs E. VV. Alison, Bagnall, John Fawcus, and. W. H, Lucas; also Mr Henderson, representing the Guild, and Mr Beer, the Union,The finding was as .follows: — In the matter of the industrial dispute between the Auckland Master. Painters and the Auckland House Painters' Union of Workers, the Board find: 1. That 44 hours constitute a week's, work. 2. That all journeyman painters be paid at the rate of 1/1 per hour, which shall be the minimum for competent workmen. That workmen over fifty; years of age may accept a.minimum rate of lid per hour. Should any dispute arise as to the competency of a workman, such dispute shall be settled by a committee, of employers and workmen, two on 1 each side, with the Chairman of the Conciliation Board as chairm__i. 3. That all boys working at the painting trade be legally indentured or apprenticed, and shall not exceed one to every four journeymen, or ' fraction of four. For the purpose of determining the proportion of apprentices to journeymen, the calcula* tion shall be based on a two-thirdf. full time employment for six months previous, for the average of*.-Abe journeymen employed. Every apprentice shall be allowed three .months' probation previous to" being indentured. The indenture to be for'four years. The wages to be for the first year 6/6, second year HO/; third year 15/, fourth year, 20/. No legal agreement in existence on the date of the acceptance of these conditions to be interfered with. All appprentices now serving- under verbal agreement shall be allowed to complete their term, subject to a proper agreement -1 being entered into. Should it be the desire of the apprentice having Served, four years to take service in the employ of any other employer with -a view to improving his general knowledge of the'trade, it shall be lawful for him to serve a further per'od of 12 months at a minimum rate of, 30/ per week. Should any employe-- fifom unforeseen circumstances be unable' to carry put his obligations 16 /the apprentice, it shall be allowable for the apprentice to complete his term with another employer, but it shall be incumbent on such apprentices to. notify the Secretary of. the .House: Painters' Union of Workers of the date when such apprenticeship begins and ends. .. . ' 4. That. Improvers shall not be recognised in the trade. 5. That travelling time be allowed. one way outside "a 2_ miles radius of the employer's shop. When working at the. North Shore, men shall catch the 7.30 a.m. boat, returning by the 5.10 p.m. boat, Saturdays 7.30 a.m.- ... boat and 32.10 p.m. boat. All fares to b,e paid by the employers. V «0. That this industrial agreement shall remain in force/for a term of ■ two years from the Ist of April, 1,901.
