TOO MUCH JEWELLERY
ARREST OF AN AUCKLANDER IN SYDNEY.
SYDNEY, February 25,
A middle aged man named Walter Waugh has been remanded for eight days on a charge of having a quantity of jewellery, supposed to have been stolen ,in his possession. Accused arrived by the Elingamite from Auckland, and was arrested after getting ashore. He first stated that his name was Ward, but afterwards admitted it was Waugh, and that he had lately been in the employ of Mr Noah Cohen, of Auckland, as commercial traveller. Jewellery was found in his possession valued at over £200.
[The accused Waugh, who belongs to Dunedin, had been in the employ of Mr Cohen for about a month. He is charged with stealing jewels with which he had been entrusted as commercial traveller for Mr Cohen. The latter when giving information to the police did not know the exact amount of jewellerj* that was missing, though he believed it to be considerable. The New Zealand polices, authorities have received a cable rcom Sj'dney which corroborates the above press message. The police cable states that "a large quantity" of jewellery was found on the accused, _t * does not specify the amount. A pol.ee officer will be sent from here to identify Waugh and escort him back to Auckland to undergo his trial.] Mr Cohen values the missing goods at about £300. Three of the missing articles have, however, been found in a local pawnshop.
