Seven victims of the Sydenham accident remain in the hospital, and are progressing satisfactorily. The suggestion that, Southport should be the landing-place for the Pacific cable was made by the Queensland Government. It can be well protected, and double communication with the southern colonies can be secured. Sir Arthur Havelock, the present Governor of Madras, is mentioned as the next State Governor of Victoria. Capper, of West Maitland, N.S.W., daughter of Rev. Edwd. Enson, of New Zealand, succumbed to terrible burns caused by her bed curtains taking fire. The coal exported from Newcastle beyond Australia for last week was 78.113 tons, which is a record for the i portFive persons were killed and four injured by the burning of a house at Birmingham.
