COROMANDEL.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
COROMANDEL, this day,
The instruments belonging to the Hauraki brass band, which has been defunct for a number of years, have been disposed of to the newly-formed band at Opitonui. The sum realised from the sale of instruments was £35, which, after liquidating all outstanding- accounts, left a net balance of £30. This sum was handed over to the secretary of the Hospital Board this m_rning by the trustees of the band, which, together with the Government subsidy, means nn increase to the Board's funds of £G(J. The sum was given unconditionally, so that the full subsidy might be earned, the trustees merely expressing the wish that a few trees be planted to improve the hospital grounds, which wish no doubt the Board will carry out when the planting season comes round. A word of praise is due to the trustees (Messrs S. Carlyon, G. Legg, G. Edmonds and Max D. King) for the faithful manner In which they fulfilled their trust. '
At the Police Court to-day, before Messrs J. B. Rockliff and S. James, Justices, a man named James Grant was charged with wandering abroad begging alms, and with imposing upon one Annie Nicholson, a boardinghouse-keeper, at Tererenga, by means of certain false pretences, thereby obtaining board and lodging to the value of £2 12/6. The evidence disclosed three separate counts. On the first charge the Bench sentenced accused to two months' imprisonment, the second charge being dismissed.
