The Indian troops had an enthusiastic, reception at Wellington yesterday afternoon. At the beginning* of this week there were IC2 male and 12 female prisoners in Mount Eden gaol. Miss Alice Hollander, a young Sydney contralto, has arrived here, and will give a series of concerts. Tlie Duke of York makes Auckland bis first port of call iv New Zealand, and when here visits Eotorua. The Key. John Wilkins, the new, pastor of the. Beresford-street Congregational Church, arrived here by the s.s. Mararoa yesterday, from * England via Sydney. At*the Auckland Institute last night it was reported that the native birds on the Little Barrier Island were everywhere plentiful, and were - apparently increasing in numbers. The birds are not now molested, and have become much tamer. A party from Wairoa (Hawke's Bay) spent a week recently at Lake Waikaremoana fishing aud sight-see-ing. The party caught ten trout one ■day, considerably over 201b. in weight and in perfect condition. A late resident of Scotland says he never tasted liner trout. «-•'..'.. Just opened ex s.s.
