DETACHMENT

The Auckland section of the Seventh Contingent was completed on Saturday, when the number was recruited up to the required 65. The riding tests were prone through under the supervision of Captain Reid, District Adjutant. And Sergeant-Major Carpenter. Of the 117 men passing through the hands of the authorities, IS failed to pass the medical tests, and 28 the riding test, leaving 71 men from which the ().') were elected, leaving half-a-dozen who will be picked first for the Eighth Contingent, which it is understood will soon be selected, though no definite instructions have been received by the local authorities. The men were put through infantry drill on Saturday, and as they are , volunteers, the work was creditably gone through. Rev. (i. Mac-Murray conducted divine service in the camp \ yesterday morning. About a dozen local officers have put in applications for commissions, and these applications have been forwarded to Wellington to the Defence Department. The men will receive their "kits" equipment in Wellington, the only articles taken from Auckland beinsr! the blankets and table utensils ust^ in the camp here. This morning the detachment was put through a course of mounted infantry work, under Sergeant Major Carpenter. They were then employed cleaning up at the camp, and making ready for their departure. At 1.15 the "fall in" was sounded, and the men formed up in fours for their inarch to the railway. The volunteers wore their uniforms, and the ex-volunteers plain clothes, all having their blankets strapped round their shoulders. The company marched down through Queen-street, being cheered by the passers by along the lino of route. On reaching the station the men broke rank if) order to say good-bye to their relatives and friends. The platform was crowded with <i moving mass of troopers and those who had come down to see them off, while a very large number proceeded out to Onehunga in order to see the last of their '-soldier boys."' The troops were accommodated in four carriages in front of the train, Adjutant Reid being in command as far as Onehunga, while Lieutenant A. Conne.ll v/ill have charge of the men on the way down the coast. Hearty cheers were given by those on the i&itform to the departing contingent, the cheers being as heartily returned. The train then moved oft" to Onehunga, where the men detrained and got on board the Rotoiti, which will convey them to Wellington.

GISBOENE, this day

The Gisborne section of the Seventh Contingent, numbering 12, with two emergency men, was despatched to "Wellington by the Te Anau last night, in charge of Sergt.-; Major Finn. The men were given a great send off, the City Hand playing them to the steamer. Some of the men left at a moment's notice, not having received information of their acceptance till Saturday morning.
